If a rug has been folded or rolled extremely tightly during shipping it may have wrinkles or creases that will need to be removed before the rug is laid on the floor. Our rug size guide will highlight key stages to help fix this issue. Try flattening the rug down first to find out which way the pile (nap) lies. You can do this by rubbing your hand in the direction of the fringes. The pile will feel smooth one way and rough up the other way.
If you rub from left to right and its smooth go the right hand side of the rug (and vice versa if its the other way). Stand at this end of the rug and roll the rug up as tight as you can. Then slowly unroll the rug and smooth the pile as you do so. Persistent wrinkles can be removed form the face of a rug by using a steam iron on ‘wool’ setting. Be sure to Iron the rug in the smooth direction of the pile. Persistent wrinkles should be treated to as they can cause uneven wear and damage.
Some rugs have wrinkles built into them as the rug has been woven with an inconsistency in the size or shape. Try not to buy one of these rugs, as they can be very difficult to look good. They will also wear very unevenly and look worse much sooner than a flat rug.
