We have already talked about decorating a child’s room-well that’s an easy job compared to a teenager’s room. We all know the tears and tantrums that take place over simple things never mind something as important as changing a bedroom.

More than likely the room has been the same since they were a child. You need to discuss what they want in the room and the budget you have to work with. Most teenagers will know what they want their bedroom to look like but if they aren’t sure have a look in interior design magazines and even search through the internet.

The easiest and cheapest way to change a room is by painting it. Take your time when choosing a colour as you may absolutely love fuchsia pink but waking up to it every morning could be a real headache. And also consider the size of the room if the room is small you will want to put lighter colours and mirrors to give the illusion that the room is bigger.

When you decide on a theme that’s when the fun starts. Take this as a project as time for you and your teenager to bond over.  Planning ahead is the key. Have all the materials that you need and take a whole weekend to start and finish the project.

Firstly get your teen to decide what they want and don’t want to keep. As a guide I would say that if it hasn’t been used in 6 months or is too small then bin it/give it to charity. If the budget is tight you can easily reuse furniture already in the room. Clean it and paint it to match with the theme for example if it was a jungle theme a deep mahogany brown would be perfect.

Spend a day shopping- picking up bits and pieces that match your theme. I think it’s best to get plain bed clothes and customise them to the theme of your room. It’s very easy to use iron on patterns or let your teen do it themselves –with your supervision- as this can be a great sense of achievement.  Accessories make all the difference- a new lampshade, throw on the bed, a new shelf, an ultra modern synethic rug and even a beanbag or two really turns a room into a place your teen wants to be.

Great rugs for a teenage girl’s rooms are synethic rug such as Catlina or Montego rug and for a teenage boy’s room a shaggy rug is nice.  The room will reflect their personality so let them be as creative as possible and hopefully it will inspire them to keep it clean and tidy!!!
